Ep 311: The Ape That Understood the Universe

The Ape That Understood the Universe

How are men and women different – really? There’s plenty of debate over this, but let’s take a look at the differences between males and females across a wide variety of species. What are the reliable differences we see again and again? That’s exactly what author Steve Stewart-Williams has done in his latest book, The Ape That Understood the Universe. If you’re interested in evolutionary psychology you’ve come to the right place. Fascinating discussion.

I totally agree with you. I know that evolutionary explanations for male and female behavior are mis-used and that is unfortunate. It seems to me that we are still a very immature society. Males have more power in so many areas of life simply because males are physically stronger and the traditions that have grown out of this are hard to put an end to. Aren’t we able to move past these traditions and stereotypes? As the latest “interviews” for the supreme court sadly show, not yet.

Are you going to explore the psychology behind how cultures assign greater socio/economic power to males? While there are good arguments for innate sex differences, it cannot morally justify discrimination and oppression – and yet often evidence such as that you interestingly explore here is used to do just that.
